Mutability
Percy Bysshe Shelley
We are as clouds that veil the midnight moon;
How restlessly they speed, and gleam, and quiver,
Streaking the darkness radiantly!- yet soon
Night closes round, and they are lost for ever:
Or like forgotten lyres, whose dissonant strings *
Give various response to each varying blast,
To whose frail frame no second motion brings
One mood or modulation like the last.
We rest.- A dream has power to poison sleep;
We rise.- one wandering thought pollutes the day;
We feel, conceive or reason, laugh or weep;
Embrace fond woe, or cast our cares away:
It is the same!- For, be it joy or sorrow,
The path of its departure still is free:
Man``s yesterday may ne``er be like his morrow;
Nought may endure but Mutability.
To Wordsworth *
Poet of Nature, thou hast wept to know
That things depart which never may return:
Childhood and youth, friendship and love``s first glow,
Have fled like sweet dreams, leaving thee to mourn.
These common woes I fell. one loss is mine
Which thou too feel``st, yet I alone deplore.
Thou wert as a lone star, whose light did shine
On some frail bark in winter``s midnight roar:
Thou hast like to a rock-built refuge stood
Above the blind and battling multitude:
In honoured poverty thy voice did weave
Songs consecrate to truth and liberty,-
Deserting these, thou leavest me to grieve,
Thus having. been, that thou shouldst cease to be.
England in 1819
An old, mad, blind, despised, and dying King; 1
Princes, the dregs of their dull race, who flow
Through public scorn,- mud from a muddy spring;
Rulers who neither see nor feel nor know,
But leechlike to their fainting country cling
Till they drop, blind in blood, without a blow.
A people starved and stabbed in th`` untilled field; 2
An army, whom liberticide and prey
Makes as a two-edged sword to all who wield;
Golden and sanguine laws which tempt and slay;
Religion Christless, Godless- a book sealed;
A senate, Time``s worst statue, unrepealed- 4
Are graves from which a glorious Phantom may 5
Burst, to illumine our tempestuous day.
A Dirge
Rough wind, that moanest loud
Grief too sad for song;
Wild wind, when sullen cloud
Knells all the night long;
Sad storm, whose tears are vain,
Bare woods, whose branches strain,
Deep caves and dreary main,-
Wail, for the world``s wrong!
The Flower That Smiles Today *
The flower that smiles today
Tomorrow dies;
Allthat we wish to stay
Tempts and then flies;
What is this world``s delight?
Lightning, that mocks the night,
Brief even as bright.-
Virtue, how frail it is!-
Friendship, how rare!-
Love, how it sells poor bliss
For proud despair!
But these though soon they fall,
Survive their joy, and all
Which ours we call.-
Whilst skies are blue and bright,
Whilst flowers are gay,
Whilst eyes that change ere night
Make glad the day;
Whilst yet the calm hours creep,
Dream thou- and from thy sleep
Then wake to weep.
Adonais
An Elegy on the Death of John Keats, Author of Endymion,
Hyperion, etc. 1
[Thou wert the morning star among the living,
Ere thy fair light had fled-
Now, having. died, thou art as Hesperus, giving
New splendour to the dead.] 2
I weep for Adonais-he is dead!
O, weep for Adonais! though our tears
Thaw not the frost which binds so dear a head!
And thou, sad Hour, selected from all years 3
To mourn our loss, rouse thy obscure compeers,
And teach them thine own sorrow, say: with me
Died Adonais; till the Future dares
Forget the Past, his fate and fame shall be
An echo and a light unto eternity!
(1-9)
. . . .
And others came . . . Desires and Adorations,
Winged Persuasions and veiled Destinies,
Splendours, and Glooms, and glimmering Incarnations
Of hopes and fears, and twilight Phantasies;
And Sorrow, with her family of Sighs,
And Pleasure, blind with tears, led by the gleam
Of her own dying smile instead of eyes,
Came in slow pomp;- the moving pomp might seem
Like pageantry of mist on an autumnal stream.
(109-117)
. . . .
Peace, peace! he is not dead, he doth not sleep-
He hath awakened from the dream of life-
``Tis we, who lost in stormy visions, keep
With phantoms an unprofitable strife,
And in mad trance, strike with our spirit``s knife
Invulnerable nothings.- We decay
Like corpses in a charnel; fear and grief
Convulse us and consume us day by day,
And cold hopes swarm like worms within our living clay.
(343-351)
. . . .
The breath whose might I have invoked in song
Descends on me; my spirit``s bark is driven,
Far from the shore, far from the trembling throng
Whose sails were never to the tempest given;
The massy earth and sphered skies are riven!
I am borne darkly, fearfully, afar;
Whilst burning through the inmost veil of Heaven,
The soul of Adonais, like a star,
Beacons from the abode where the Eternal are.

AUTUMN.
THE warm sun is failing; the bleak wind is
wailing;
The bare boughs are sighing; the pale flowers
are dying;
And the Year
On the earth, her death-bed, in shroud of leaves
dead,
Is lying.
Come, months, come away,
From November to May;
In your saddest array
Follow the bier
Of the dead, cold Year,
And like dim shadows watch by her sepulchre.
The chill rain is falling; the nipt worm is
crawling;
The rivers are swelling; the thunder is knelling
For the year;
The blithe swallows are flown, and the lizards
each gone
To his dwelling;
Come, months, come away;
Put on white, black, and gray;
Let your light sisters play,-
Ye, follow the bier
Of the dead, cold Year,
And make her grave green with tear on tear.
