Gathering the Party - Community update. #2
Though this journey began now years ago when we visited Wizards of the Coast for the first time in 2017, these past few weeks have been momentous and emotional, since this was the first time we were able to share Baldur’s Gate 3 with all of you, the people for whom the game is being made.
We will soon embark on an epic adventure as Baldur’s Gate 3 enters Early Access, and we couldn’t possibly venture forth without first gathering you, our party. One thousand of you gathered with us as we streamed the game live for the first time at PAX East in an auditorium filled to the brim, and an extra thousand of you were sadly turned away because there was no more space. Hundreds of thousands of you gathered online which - we’re told in confidence - broke some records. Thousands of you each waited three hours to gather with us at our PAX East booth, to see what would have happened if the dice rolls weren’t against us. It has been humbling and exciting to gather together as we start this new journey, venturing forth, going the way of the dice.
What you will eventually play has been in the planning at Larian and closely with Wizards of the Coast for over 4 years now, with their key creative people colliding with our key creative people in ways that we will eventually talk about in greater length. Our task is to create the ultimate Dungeons & Dragons game; a loving and modern sequel to Baldur’s Gate 2. Oozing with 5e D&D greatness, set in the world that you know and love. You will explore Baldur’s Gate 100 years after Baldur’s Gate 2. The Bhaalspawn saga has ended, and a new threat is converging on the city of Baldur's Gate. But the gods do not forget, and the shadows and scars of the past will not stay silent. You will meet and get to know many new characters, and encounter some of the legendary characters you know and love.
Most importantly, you’ll learn how their stories have evolved. And as you play, you will heavily influence their fate. Over the course of the past 3 weeks, the final missing ingredient has been added into our new development pipeline: you.
Let’s look at how we’ve evolved since the release of Divinity: Original Sin 2 in 2017. Firstly, we finished Divinity: Original Sin 2 with 120 people. DOS2 was shipped on the second version of the Divinity engine (we still haven’t found a cool name for it yet), and our Producer David Walgrave said recently in an interview with TechRaptor that in BG3 "there’s about 20-30% of the Original Sin engine left and we rewrote so many systems and so many things." We’ve been colloquially calling this 4.0 engine the “Baldur’s Gate Engine”, and it’s designed from the ground up for Baldur’s Gate.
But how does this happen? Between 2017 and the announcement of BG3 we’ve grown to 250 people + we have over 100 outsourcers working on this. Still independent. Funded entirely by yourselves who dived so eagerly into Divinity: Original Sin 2. We were quiet since the announcement just before E3 of the previous year. But internally, kinetic energy has propelled us forward with new systems, pipelines, and people who when not playing D&D were all helping us to put together what you saw at PAX East, 2020. There’s quite the adventure ahead.
We’ve built an engine that allows all 250 people at Larian collaborate to become the ultimate DM. Allowing for near-limitless reactivity, responsiveness, and a memory that never forgets who you are, or what you’ve done. No matter who you roll, dice-rolls, modifiers, and physical simulation have all been designed to simulate a D&D experience that feels as though it’s straight from the imagination, where no matter the dice roll the story will continue. It’s also a game that is intended to span the entire range of human emotion. It is in equal parts a dark and a light game. “We always want to make failure as interesting as it possibly can,” said Senior Writer Adam Smith. “We don’t put everything that’s cool and interesting behind success.”
“Light and dark are really good sources of advantage,” noted Swen in a recent GameSpot interview. The philosophies that define the rules in D&D 5e also define the narrative, where you’ll often make difficult decisions through initiative or through the roll of the dice. The Baldur’s Gate games were dark - sometimes darker than many people remember. Baldur’s Gate 3 is no exception, though in 2020 we’re able to take the gamut of emotion and experience and stretch it further due to systems, simulation, and of course also our cinematics team. Unfortunately we did not make it to the end of our PAX East 2020 live demo due to a feature (see: bug), but those in the hall witnessed a scene where Astarion’s hunger got the better of him, and through a series of dice rolls (and often audience choice), Astarion sank his teeth into Shadowheart to varying degrees of mortality. Astarion was happy (systemically), but Shadowheart often ended up dead (also without irony, systemically).
Baldur’s Gate 3 is on course to be a ‘Mature’ game, which is publishing language for “if you go any further the ratings board is going to be extremely annoying”. We want to push the limits of every theme within the game, which should allow you to play exactly how you’d like to play. Astarion may be a Vampire Spawn, but that doesn’t mean he has to be evil - if hungry. Though you saw one path at PAX East, there were many possibilities for good, and evil -- note also, everything in between. It has always been Larian’s plan to create games that allow you to play however you wish. This larger team, and this new engine, allow us to push this further than ever before. Much further than Divinity: Original Sin 2.
As you delve into an epic adventure that subverts the binary morality found in many RPGs, and explore Baldur’s Gate with new and existing characters, 100 years after the story of the first two games, dice roll by dice roll, we hope that together we can reignite that great sense of discovery you felt as you dived for the first time into Baldur’s Gate 1 & 2, bringing the experience of an open-ended D&D game to photo-realistic realisation, albeit with 5e rules in place of 2nd edition rules. Things have come a long way in 20 years, but what’s important to us is that you’re along for the ride.
You have many questions, and we have answers. We’ll be hosting a Reddit AMA where you can ask Swen (Creative Director), David (Producer), Adam (Senior Writer), Nick (Lead Systems Designer), and Jiji (Writing Director) your questions. 11:00 PT on March 12, over on Reddit!
See you all in Early Access.

Baldur’s Gate 3 New Gameplay Sizzle
Larian Studios released a “sizzle” to promote the upcoming Baldur’s Gate 3 news that shall be dropping throughout the month of June, starting with June 6th via the Guerilla Collective Showcase. Exciting times are ahead for fans of the Baldur’s Gate series!
The Guerrilla Collective is a new online digital games festival, established to reveal fresh announcements, trailers, gameplay and more from some of the hottest developers and publishers around the world! The event takes place June 6th-8th.
Baldur’s Gate 3 Gameplay: We are in the Forgotten Realms, a land of many races and multiple divine beings. We know that the world is in turmoil: armies of evil (gnolls, orcs, duergar, goblins, drow…) rampage along the Sword Coast, and refugees swarm to Baldur’s Gate. Amid all this chaos, a new cult is on the rise: the cult of the Absolute. Seeking to overthrow the old order, its shadowy network is chipping away at the Forgotten Realms foundations. Baldur’s Gate itself will be the first to fall. For Lae’zel & Baldur’s Gate 3 content check out Kazuliski.
Baldur’s Gate 3 Minthara & Sazza
In the latest Baldur’s Gate 3 News, there is a cornucopia of exciting updates to cover. In an impressive interview with Venture Beat, senior writer Adam Smith stressed the importance of giving purpose to all the NPC’s that you will meet in the game, rather than the See monster, kill monster modus operandi that some subscribe to.
For example, Baldur’s Gate 3 wants to portray the plight of Tiefling refugees of a Hells-torn city as they seek hope in a world that’s already predisposed to hate devil-spawned beings. The challenge facing a vampire spawn attempting to overcome his thirst for blood, or perhaps he will embrace it. How a githyanki and elf may need to join forces to rid themselves of illithid tadpole time-bombs.
Adam would confirm that Descent into Avernus and the Nine Hells will be heavily linked to the story of Baldur’s Gate 3. Tieflings have fled from the city of Elturel, and Baldur’s Gate 3 follows the canonical ending for Descent into Avernus that Elturel was saved. It was taken to Avernus, and it’s now been returned to Faerûn. The Tieflings have been blamed by a myriad of people for those events. Tiefling refugees are for the most part trying to get to Baldur’s Gate. Subsequently the events that happened in Descent into Avernus are going to come back and haunt people again and again. This will tie into the origin stories. So far, five have effectively been revealed, but more will be coming. Some will have a stronger connection to Hell than others.
Baldur’s Gate 3 will move away from having. strict laws of alignment, where it’s good and evil. Adam gives the example of Tieflings. He does not want to say, “Oh, every Tiefling is a victim. Every Tiefling is somebody who’s suffering.” But it’s absolutely part of their experience a lot of the time.
There are also personal parallels. All of us at points in our lives have felt judged for things that we don’t deserve to be judged for. Sometimes it can simply be who you are. That’s important to Larian. When you do get to Baldur’s Gate, you find Tieflings who’ve never experienced that kind of prejudice, because it’s not everyone’s story. Larian don’t want to take any race and say, this is who you are. The race you choose can significantly impact upon your experience. There’s going to be people who expect certain things from you, and you can absolutely tell them that they can go, insert. random expletive.
You can meet goblins and become immediately hostile and kill them all. Alternatively, you might be genuinely fond of the goblins which presents different opportunities.
The goblins have a new god, the Absolute, and that’s given them a sense of purpose. They view this as a possibility to be something other than the thing that people get experience by killing. They know that they’re at the bottom of the food chain. They know the drow are going to use them as slaves and don’t care about them at all. Giving them this sense of hope, that maybe things are changing for them, that does make them slightly tragic according to Adam.
If you use Speak with the Dead, you can always learn more about who people are. Adam placed emphasis on Larian wanting everyone to be grounded in a world that feels believable and has a history. All these people have their own history. With the goblins, it was important that if you decide to engage with them on a different level, there’s entire stories there. We have goblin kids in the camp that you can speak to and learn about. Sazza, is a captured goblin that gets shot. If you save her, then you have an entire series of events where you can spend hours of the game with her hanging around with you. You can learn a lot about her. You rescue her from this awful situation. She’s a prisoner of war, and she gets executed at point blank range if you don’t do anything about it. But you can save her, and if you save her, then you learn a lot about her.
A Drow, Minthara, is incredibly villainous. But again, if you spend more time talking to her, you can learn a lot about how she fits in. She’s evil. But she’s also someone who’s lived in the culture of extreme paranoia and extreme violence, almost whimsical violence at times. Speaking with Minthara will be circa 30 hours into the game depending on your playstyle. If, however you sell out the Tieflings, then you can burn down the entire region of Act One. You can kill every character in it. That completely changes the way the story goes and how your party interacts with you.
Concerning the Absolute, you will start to learn more about this new cult through Volo Volothamp Geddarm. He’s not really thinking about illithids. You can tell him all about it, and Volo has a lot of entertaining things to say if you reveal you have a parasite in your head. He’s fascinated.
Concerning Lae’zel, she does not know what Baldur’s Gate is. Therefore, you can have cool conversations with her if you’re a Baldurian.
Finally, Adam would draw reference to the symbolic nature of the Illithid mural that was deliberately shown in the trailer. When the Red Dragon’s attack, it shatters. The history of the mind flayers will be explored throughout the game.

Baldur’s Gate 3 The Absolute & Mind
In the latest Baldur’s Gate 3 News, Matt Holland, Baldur’s Gate 3 Combat Designer, and Adam Smith, Senior Writer, would reveal several interesting details in an interview with WCCFtech.
Firstly, they addressed some vocal critics on social media who hold the belief that it is not a true sequel to the previous games.
Adam would comment that “For the people who think that it doesn’t quite look like they wanted it to look or doesn’t quite feel like they hoped it would, then honestly, I would just say to see more of it. I think they’ll be convinced quickly. The deeper we go into it, the more and more they’ll feel the D&D influence and how it’s truly the heart of it. The more they see the systems and rule set, they’ll start to see we are really using that ruleset. Some of the stuff that they recognize stayed in there because it makes sense in the world. The surfaces and the environmental interactions, we’ve built on them but it didn’t make sense to drop them just because BG3 looked like Divinity because Divinity is good as well. It’s a continuation of that but it’s D&D to its core lore wise and systems wise.”
Adam would refer to the importance of having. early access, so that fans will be able to provide feedback and actively engage in the development process.
There will be a level cap in BG3 but details were not forthcoming. Ray Tracing has also been confirmed for the game.
In terms of a day and night cycle within the game, it is implied there will not be one. Adam explains that as a multiplayer game the day-night cycles would become incredibly complicated. We do not do the day-night cycle but we do the things where things in the world happen because you caused them to happen and they can happen off-screen. There are events that happen and things that will, because of the choices you’ve made, things will happen elsewhere. Those are real, those are systemic. Our systems are running in the background the whole time. There are incredibly deep systems. Some of them don’t make sense for this game, but yeah, we think about it and we’ve talked about it.
Matt confirmed that all combat is bespoke and there are no generated encounters.
In an interview with PC Gamer UK, Swen compared the Mindflayer parasite to the Bhaalspawn legacy from the earlier games. It’s a power that can be tapped, but it comes from a dangerous source. Every single time that you use it, you give into it. And as you give into it, things start happening when you encounter other people with tadpoles, and you might not be so resistant. Eventually you’ll find mind flayers, and if you use the tadpole, you might find that it’s difficult. In the previous games, giving into the whims of the Lord of Murder granted Gorion’s Ward certain powers, such as being able to transform into a Slayer. While it was cool, I felt the implementation was somewhat lacking, so it will be interesting to see how Larian will implement the parasite abilities.
In previous news, there were some comments about a kinky scene, albeit details were lacking. In the demo, Sven’s character tries to steal a toe ring from a goblin, and he manages to pull it off by kissing the goblins feet while employing some sleight of hand. The entire make out session is in mo-capped animation.
In addition to mind flayers, it appears there is another sinister force at work in Faerun. A new God who is gathering all forms of evil that would normally not cooperate with one another, under the moniker of the Absolute. Furthermore, you will meet the MindFlayer who captured you on the nautiloid. Sven commented that, if you make some unlucky rolls, he will suck your brain out of your skull. How delightful.
Swen Vincke would comment that “Light and dark are really good sources of advantage.” The philosophies that define the rules in D&D 5e also define the narrative, where you’ll often make difficult decisions through initiative or through the roll of the dice. The Baldur’s Gate games were dark — sometimes darker than many people remember. Baldur’s Gate 3 is no exception, though in 2020 we’re able to take the gamut of emotion and experience and stretch it further due to systems, simulation, and of course also our cinematics team
Larian Studios apologised for the bug on their live stream where they were supposed to show the scene where Astarion, sinks his teeth into Shadowheart, ending up killing her. Not to worry, I’ve got you covered with some footage.
Larian confirmed, BG3 will be a mature game, and they want to push the limits of every theme within the game.

Developers actively engaging with fans! It feels like I have entered a parallel universe.
In other news, Adam Smith, Senior writer on BG3, in an interview with the Mirror shared some interesting details. Adam confirmed you start the game approximately 200 miles east of Baldur’s Gate. The City which was under attack by the Mind Flayers in the most recent trailer was Yartar, as far as I am aware.
On the question of whether Jim Cummings will be voicing any characters, he voiced Minsc previously, Adam would not comment, but he did say that in terms of the narrative, some people live very long in Faerun, and some races are naturally long lived, while others such as Volo are still alive via magical means, so there will be strong links to the previous games.
In terms of the narrative, you are burdened with a great power devouring you from within. Which is a reference to the Illithid tadpole that your character was implanted with, as shown in the trailer. How far down the path of darkness will you let it take you? The fate of the forgotten realms is on your party’s shoulders. Will you carry it to salvation, or descend with it to hell.
Amid all this chaos, a new cult is on the rise, the cult of the Absolute. Seeking to overthrow the older order, its shadowy network is chipping away at the Forgotten Realms foundations. Baldur’s Gate itself will be the first to fall. What is interesting though, is that the de/s!crip/ion ends with, you desperately seek a cure, and find that the tadpole gives you godlike powers. You find yourselves on the stage of a complot hatched by none other than the Dead Three: the gods of Murder, Tyranny, and Death.
This de/s!crip/ion provided by Larian Studios opens up quite a few interesting possibilities. While the lore is largely unknown, sometimes tadpoles undergo mutations that produce unexpected results during ceremorphosis. For instance, creating an ultharid, a significantly more powerful version of a Mind Flayer, that has the potential to become an Elder Brain. But even these are generally not considered godlike. As for the Dead three, this is a reference to Bane, the Lord of Darkness, Bhaal, the Lord of Murder and Myrkul the Lord of Bones. Originally they were three mortal adventurers who sought the path of god hood, known as the Dark Three. They would encounter Jergal, who acquiesced to their demands, he grew tired as the god of the dead. He thus gave up his portfolios to the three of them, thus apotheosizing them in the process. They would become the Dead Three when they were killed during the Time of Troubles. Bane and Torm killed each other, Myrkul was killed by the mortal mage Midnight, while Bhaal was slain by Cyric using the sword of Godsbane.
Some facts:
BG3 is built using the new Divinity 4.0 engine.
It will have a layered Crime System that holds you accountable for your actions and affects your reputation.
4-player online multiplayer and split-screen co-op for 2 players.
To begin with there will be 15 D&D races & subraces and 8 classes but more will be announced.
Currently there are five origin stories available.
Lae’zel, Githyanki fighter, a consummate warrior, ferocious even by the standards of a githyanki creche. Faced with transforming into the very monster she’s sworn to destroy, Lae’zel must prove herself worthy of re-joining her people, if they don’t execute her first.
Gale, Human Wizard, Gale has one ambition, to become the greatest wizard Faerun has ever known. Yet his thirst for magic led to disaster. A Netherese Destruction Orb beats in his chest, counting down to an explosion that can level a city. Gale is confident he’ll overcome it, but time is not on his side.
Shadowheart, half-elf cleric, one of Shar’s dark disciples, Shadowheart was sent on a suicide mission to steal an item of great power. While wrestling with her faith and a strange, untamed magic, Shadowheart has enemies on all sides, and a long-buried secret to uncover.
Wyll, Human Warlock, Noble by birth, Wyll made his name as the heroic Blade of Frontiers. He keeps his pact with a devil well-hidden, and is desperate to escape the hellish bargain, even if that means rescuing the seductive creature that made the deal.
Astarion, High Elf Rogue, he prowled the night as a vampire spawn for centuries, serving a sadistic master until he was snatched away. Now he can walk in the light, but can he leave his wicked past behind?
The ability to speak with the dead will be important and will create interesting scenarios. Lead Writer Adam Smith in an interview with Screen Rant revealed that you could potentially kill a bandit on the highway, then use the ability to speak dead, only to find out appearances were deceiving.
For early access it will be released simultaneously on Stadia and Steam
In an interview with Gamespot, Swen confirmed that, due to the dice rolls, Larian wanted to make sure that in failing a dice roll, be it narratively, or systemically, you will still find interesting and fun things, meaning one will continue playing rather than reload, that games in the past have encouraged.
All companions will be open to romance by the protagonist, but companions will also form romances with each other which might complicate things, create jealousy and provide competition. For example, the Githyanki Lae’zel will sleep with you one night and might sleep with someone else the next.
Executive producer David Walgrave told Eurogamer, There’s a lot of technical upgrades and updates that we did to our engine, and I don’t know if it would be capable of being able to actually run on those things, in reference to the PS4 and Xbox One.
In an interview with Geek, Walgrave confirmed you will see characters from the previous games returning in BG3.
In a somewhat strange interview, Vice would claim, the demo was a kinky affair, and felt like a D&D adventure run by someone who just learned about Femdom, subs and wikifeet. I seriously must have watched the wrong demo!

Baldur’s Gate 3 Absolute, Lae’zel & Kinky
