'a rolling stone gathers no stone (구르는 돌에는 이끼가 끼지 않는다)' 그리고 'a stitch in time saves nine (제때의 바늘 한번이 아홉 바느질을 던다)'와 같이 일을 근면 성실 그리고 열심히 해야한다는 격려이다.
The Book of St. Albans이고 그 기록은 다음과 같다:
"As the olde englysshe prouerbe sayth in this wyse. Who soo wool ryse erly shall be holy healthy & zely."
그래서 'holy healthy & zely'는 'healthy, wealthy and wise'와 다를 바 없는 'wise, healthy and fortunate'로 해석된다
"Earely to bed and earely to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise"
(Poor Richard's Almanack 1739)
그는 Poor Richard라는 필명으로 Poor Richard's Almanack이라는 격언, 시, 일기예보 등을 포함한 연례 잡지를 1732년부터 1758년도까지 발간했는데 1735년판에 'Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy wealthy and wise'라는 표현이 발견되었다.
