Sokoya, I said looking through
the net of wrinkles into
wise black pools
of her eyes.
What do you say in Athabascan
when you leave each other?
What is the word
for goodbye?
A shade of feeling rippled
the wind- tanned skin,
Ah, nothing, she said,
watching the river flash.
She looked at me close.
We just say Ttaa. That means,
See you.
We never leave each other.
When does your mouth
say goodbye to your heart?
She touched me light
as a bluebell.
You forget when you leave us;
You're so small then.
We don't use that word.
We always think you're coming back,
but if you don't
we'll see you someplace else.
You understand.
There is no word for goodbye.
소코야, 하고 나는 불렀다
주름살투성이 속
검은 웅덩이 같은
이모의 지혜로운 눈을 들여다보며.
우리가 서로 헤어질 때
아다바스칸 부족의 말로는
뭐라고 하지요?
굿바이에 해당하는 말이 뭐예요?
언뜻 마음에 잔물결이 이는 듯

작별하는 말을 하지?
이모는 푸른종꽃이나 되는 것처럼
가만히 나를 만졌다.
헤어지면 잊게 된단다.
그러면 보잘 것 없게 돼.
그래서 우린 그 말을 쓰지 않아.
우린 늘 네가 돌아올 거라 생각한단다.
돌아오지 않으면
어딘가 다른 데서 만나게 될 거야.
무슨 말인지 알겠지.
우리에겐 작별의 말이 없단다.
