2026년 6월 7일(현지시간), Xbox Games Showcase에서 4A Games는 신작 ‘METRO 2039’의 첫 게임플레이 트레일러를 공개했다. 이번 영상은 약 3분 분량으로, 모두 실제 게임 내에서 녹화된 장면으로 구성됐으며, 거짓과 선동으로 메트로를 장악한 새로운 총통 헌터(Hunter) 의 모습도 처음으로 선보였다. 게임은 오는 2027년 2월 Xbox Series S|X, PlayStation 5, Steam, Epic Games Store를 통해 출시될 예정이다.

이번 트레일러는 강렬한 전투 연출과 높은 그래픽 완성도를 앞세워, 시리즈 특유의 밀실형 잠입 액션과 지상·지하를 넘나드는 탐험, 그리고 메트로 시리즈의 상징적인 시스템을 다시 한 번 강조했다. 여기에 생존 요소를 자연스럽게 녹여낸 연출도 더해졌다.

영상에서는 신규 은신 무기 샤툰(Shatun) 과 함께, 장비 운용의 폭을 넓혀줄 새로운 브리칭 차지도 확인할 수 있다. 플레이어는 메트로의 어두운 심장부로 깊숙이 파고들며, 한층 진화한 전투와 생존을 경험하게 된다.

‘메트로 2039’에서 메트로는 강력한 새 정권 아래 완전히 다른 모습으로 변했다. 그 중심에는 광신적인 스파르탄 리더로 알려진 헌터가 있다. 주인공 스트레인저(The Stranger)는 거짓과 위선을 일삼는 총통을 향한 분노와 증오에 휩싸여 있다.

헌터는 본래 스파르탄 오더의 일원으로, 메트로를 지키겠다고 맹세한 전설적인 레인저였다. 그러나 지금은 그가 내세웠던 가치는 모두 거짓에 점철되어 무너졌고, 한때 모두를 위한 수호자로 여겨졌던 스파르탄은 더 이상 예전의 모습이 아니다. 스트레인저는 헌터야말로 과거 스파르탄이 맞서 싸우던 바로 그 적이 되어 버렸다고 믿게 된다.

한편, ‘METRO 2039’는 러시아의 전면 침공이 계속되는 가운데 우크라이나와 몰타에서 개발되고 있다. 4A Games는 현재도 가능한 모든 방식으로 우크라이나와 현지 개발 인력을 지원하고 있다고 밝혔다.
